卡塔文化工作室位於台東都蘭糖廠,工作室以琉璃珠製成的各式藝品為經營核心,亦推出琉璃珠燒製課程,旨在傳承排灣族的傳統文化、技藝與生命哲學。「卡塔」(qata)便是排灣族語中,琉璃珠的意思,在古語中有「美麗的果子」之意。琉璃珠在排灣族傳統文化中占有重要的地位,珠子上五彩繽紛的圖紋,背後隱含的,是一篇篇各具魅力的故事,更是屬於排灣族最深邃的文化內涵。

現任工作室執行長,同時也是卡塔文化創辦者的林秀慧,曾經試圖隱匿身上一半的排灣族血統,卻在父親離世後驟然領悟傳承,或者說聯繫斷裂的恐懼,於是毅然決然回到東部,成立卡塔文化,試圖找回那些即將遺忘的記憶。工作室成立至今,已整理出50多種琉璃珠圖紋、36種不同的意涵。林秀慧認為琉璃珠是一種文化溝通的物件,傳遞著整個族群的生命哲學與人生體驗。因此他們以最嚴謹、審慎的態度對待作品,對細節百般苛求,才最終化為一條條質樸而真切的祝福,落到某位貴人身側。

The Kata Culture Studio is located at the Taitung Dulan Sugar Factory, specializing in a variety of artworks made from glass beads, and offering courses in glass bead firing. Its core mission is to preserve the traditional culture, craftsmanship, and life philosophy of the Paiwan tribe. “Kata” (qata) in the Paiwan language refers to glass beads, originally meaning “beautiful fruit” in ancient times. Glass beads hold a significant place in Paiwan traditional culture, adorned with colorful patterns that conceal enchanting stories, embodying the profound cultural essence of the Paiwan tribe.

 

Currently serving as the CEO of the studio and also its founder, Lin Hsiu-hui once tried to conceal her half Paiwan ancestry. However, upon her father’s sudden passing, she abruptly realized the importance of inheritance—or perhaps the fear of severed connections. Determined, she returned to the eastern part of Taiwan and established Kata Culture, aiming to reclaim those memories on the brink of being forgotten. Since its establishment, the studio has cataloged over 50 different patterns of glass beads, each carrying 36 distinct meanings. Lin Hsiu-hui believes glass beads serve as cultural artifacts that communicate the life philosophy and experiences of an entire community. Thus, they approach their work with utmost rigor and meticulousness, striving for perfection in every detail, so that each piece ultimately transforms into a heartfelt blessing, destined for someone special.
