王昱心自小成長在台東,與卑南族的父親一家居住在近寶桑部落(Papulu),在往後的求學階段,到了澳洲史溫本大學國家設計學院攻讀設計博士,並帶著學術所成回到家鄉,在教育、亞太島洲區域的跨文化藝術研究裡也持續鑽研、奉獻至今。
除了是一位教育者、在國立東華大學原住民民族學院擔任教授,王昱心也同時是一位陶藝家。從小就受美術訓練的她,在大學時開始接觸各種不同的媒材,當時,「陶」對她而言是一種全新的創作方式,從那時起,她一頭栽入陶藝的創作與研究,至今已有三十年之久。研究所畢業後,王昱心花了很長一段時間,投入台灣不同地區原鄉文化發展的協力與陪伴工作,她也在這些田野現場累積了許多對於理論的實踐與反思,包括文化和產品之間的關係、文化創意與產業之間的關係。王昱心自身的藝術創作也與這些田野經驗有很深的關聯,在她往後的許多作品裡,在在可以見到原住民的生活、美學、思想與智慧,深深牽動著她的創作關懷,甚而成為她透過藝術所欲以創造的世界觀。
「陶」之於台灣原住民而言,本就是一種極重要的物質技術與文化。在遠古時代,原住民的生活即大量依賴於陶器的製作,它不只是必要的生活用品,在部分族群中,陶製品甚至被賦予特殊的社會象徵意義,難以被取代。作為一位陶藝創作者,王昱心承接了「陶」在原住民歷史中的遠古內涵,並透過當代性的創作手法,體現出古老而新生的陶作藝術。在近年的創作與研究中,她甚而開始著重於不同地域原住民土地之黏土礦的勘查,並在創作中呈現出某種對於土地和自然秩序的尊重。
〈星芒盒〉是王昱心的代表作品之一,亦是她反思傳統圖紋與當代應用的示例。這一系列作品以瓷漿為材料,灌模製作,將「八角花」立體化為外型,它的靈感來自於卑南族與其他許多族群的服飾上都可見到的繡紋。王昱心的許多作品都傳達出一種平衡性,若將〈星芒盒〉放入她的創作脈絡中,彷彿可以看到她一再透過某種沉謐的、秩序性的律動,表現出對於大自然、對原住民原初宇宙觀的啟發與回應。承接著族群的遠古記憶與扎實的研究經驗、再透過當代身體的思維與實踐,王昱心的陶藝觀點,造就出在近年陶藝創作與原住民藝術場域中,非常有辨識度的藝術樣貌。
Wang Yuhsin grew up in Taitung, Taiwan, living with her father’s family from the Puyuma tribe near the Papulu community. During her academic journey, she pursued a doctoral degree in design at the National Institute for Experimental Arts at the University of New South Wales in Australia. Returning with her academic achievements, she has dedicated herself to education and continued her research in cross-cultural arts within the Asia-Pacific region.
Apart from being an educator and serving as a professor at the College of Indigenous Studies at National Dong Hwa University, Wang Yuhsin is also a ceramic artist. Trained in art from a young age, she began exploring various mediums during university, with ceramics representing a new creative avenue for her. For the past thirty years, she has immersed herself in ceramic art creation and research.
After graduating, Wang Yuhsin spent considerable time collaborating on and accompanying the development of indigenous cultures across Taiwan. Her field experiences have accumulated practical insights and reflections on theories, including relationships between culture and products, as well as the dynamics between cultural creativity and industries. Her artistic creations are deeply connected to these field experiences, reflecting indigenous life, aesthetics, thoughts, and wisdom, which form the core of her artistic concerns and inspirations.
In Taiwan’s indigenous communities, pottery has always been a crucial material technology and cultural symbol. As a ceramic artist, Wang Yuhsin has inherited and innovated upon ancient traditions of indigenous pottery, employing contemporary techniques to showcase her unique artistic style. In recent years, she has focused on exploring clay minerals from different indigenous lands and expressing respect for the land and natural order through her creations.
One of Wang Yuhsin’s representative works, “Star Radiance Box,” not only demonstrates her profound reflections on traditional patterns and contemporary applications but also molds porcelain into a three-dimensional “octagonal flower” form inspired by embroidery commonly found in Puyuma and other ethnic group costumes. Her artworks convey a sense of balance, as if echoing a serene and orderly rhythm, resonating with nature and indigenous cosmology. Wang Yuhsin’s perspective on ceramics, rooted in deep understanding of ethnic history and contemporary innovation, has established her as a distinctive figure in contemporary ceramic art and indigenous art domains.
